New Testament Affirmations: Romans, Philippians, Titus, Hebrews & Peter
The epistle to the Hebrews opens with one of the most remarkable descriptions of who Jesus is and then asks a series of questions:
Hebrews 1:1-4 (CSB) Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. 2 In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe, through him. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high., 4 So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Hebrews 1:6, 8 (CSB) Again, when he brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “And let all God’s angels worship him.” 8 but to the Son: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of justice. (See Psalm 45:6)
The universe was created through Christ, and he is the heir of all things; the radiance of God’s very own glory and exact expression of his nature is perfectly shone through Jesus Christ.
The worship of God’s angels, the eternal throne of God, and the scepter of his righteous kingdom are ascribed to Jesus, all of which would be blasphemous claims unless Jesus is Yahweh in the flesh. God did not create another god in Jesus Christ, he took upon himself human flesh (which is what the term “Son” refers to), and expressed the radiance of his glory and nature in a way that is accessible to mankind.
Paul likewise confesses that Jesus is God in the flesh:
Romans 9:5 (CSB) The ancestors are theirs, and from them, by physical descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, praised forever. Amen.
Philippians 2:6 (CSB) who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited.
Colossians 2:9 (CSB) For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ
Titus 2:13 (CSB) while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He asserts that Christ descended from the patriarchs and is “God over all – praised forever”, that Jesus “existed in the form of God”, that the “entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ”, and that we are all awaiting the “appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”.
Paul is not advocating polytheism – saying Jesus is another God – but that Jesus is Yahweh himself come in the flesh. Jesus is one in form and equality with God, though he did not consider his privilege as deity something to be exploited, and was willing to take upon himself the very form and fragility of his own creation so that he could save the lost.
Peter affirms the faith that Jesus is our God and Savior:
2nd Peter 1:1 (CSB) Simeon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ: to those who have received a faith equal to ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.
The New Testament affirms that Jesus is our God and Savior.
