NEW TESTAMENT AFFIRMATIONS: Paul & Peter
The epistle to the Hebrews opens with one of the most remarkable descriptions of who Jesus is:
Hebrews 1:1-4 (CSB) Long ago God spoke to the fathers by the prophets at different times and in different ways. 2 In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe, through him. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. 4 So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Hebrews 1:6, 8 (CSB) Again, when he brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “And let all God’s angels worship him.” 8 but to the Son: “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the scepter of your kingdom is a scepter of justice. (See Psalm 45:6)
God now speaks to us by his Son, who is the radiance of his glory and exact expression of his nature, and who is the creator and heir of all things! The gap between God and mankind is closed by Jesus Christ, who is Yahweh dwelling in the flesh, come to show us the way home. Scripture speaks of Jesus when it says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever” and commands the angels of God to worship Jesus!
This is Paul’s confession as well:
Romans 9:5 (CSB) The ancestors are theirs, and from them, by physical descent, came the Christ, who is God over all, praised forever. Amen.
Philippians 2:6 (CSB) who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited.
Colossians 2:9 (CSB) For the entire fullness of God’s nature dwells bodily in Christ
Titus 2:13 (CSB) while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
There is only one God: “I am the Lord, and there is no other; there is no God but me” (Isaiah 45:5). Jesus is not another God, he is Yahweh dwelling in the flesh.
And there is only one Savior: “I—I am the Lord. Besides me, there is no Savior” (Isaiah 43:11). Jesus is our Savior because Jesus is Yahweh in the flesh.
Peter affirms the faith that Jesus is our God and Savior:
2nd Peter 1:1 (CSB) Simeon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ: to those who have received a faith equal to ours through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.
The New Testament witnesses to the world that Jesus exists in the very form of God, that the very fullness of God’s own nature dwells bodily in him, and that he is both our God and Savior. The testimony of the New Testament is either true, or it is blasphemous, but either way, the testimony of the New Testament is very clear about who Jesus is.
