A Hell That is Real

I’m writing on this subject because what God’s word says about hell has come under such profound attack and we can’t afford to be deceived on this subject. I don’t believe I am guilty of any hyperbole in saying that there is no other Biblical doctrine receiving more attack, and from which preachers have retreated more, than the Biblical doctrine of hell.

The consequences of concealing this doctrine are profound; we create a wrathless god in the image of our own perverse society, we deceive people about the nature and character of the true God, and we deceive ourselves into thinking there is no urgency behind our Great Commission.

The truth about hell starts with the truth about us:

Romans 1:18-25 (CSB) For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, that is, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what he has made. As a result, people are without excuse. 21 For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles. 24 Therefore God delivered them over in the desires of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served what has been created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.

Built into every soul is an innate sense of the divine.

Though we have all forgotten God and suppressed the truth of His nature with our unrighteousness, yet there remains a sense of His glory that nags the broken human spirit because we were all created in the image of our Creator – though we have fallen far from that holy creation!

No man or woman on earth is innocent before God, and He will punish the sons of rebellion.

Hell is God’s answer to our wholesale rebellion against truth:

Isaiah 66:24 (CSB) They will see the dead bodies of those who have rebelled against me; for their worm will never die, their fire will never go out, and they will be a horror to all mankind.

Hell is real because our sin is real.

In this series, we’re going to explore what the Bible teaches about Hell.
