Verse 27c: Remain in Him
As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
There is only one anointing from the Holy One that enlightens our hearts to the truth – the Holy Spirit of Christ. From him we listen to the word of truth that was delivered to us in Scripture by the apostles and prophets sent by Christ.
“That anointing is real, not counterfeit”: there is only one authorized message from God, all others are counterfeits:
Jude 3 (CSB) I found it necessary to write, appealing to you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all.
Galatians 1:8 (CSB) But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, a curse be on him!
The mystery of God’s word has been made fully known through the apostolic ministry appointed by our King – Jesus Christ. This mystery is properly understood by the faith that is made alive by the Holy Spirit and illuminated by the testimony of God’s word.
Colossians 1:25-26 (CSB) I have become its servant, according to God’s commission that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints.
“Just as it has taught you, remain in him”: the emphasis of our anointed teaching is the lifestyle we live in keeping the word:
1st Thessalonians 2:13 (CSB) This is why we constantly thank God, because when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you welcomed it not as a human message, but as it truly is, the word of God, which also works effectively in you who believe.
1st Thessalonians 4:1-2 (CSB) Additionally then, brothers and sisters, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received instruction from us on how you should live and please God—as you are doing—do this even more. 2 For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
Why do some people not live in a manner that pleases God? Because they have not been taught by Christ through the living word to love and please God. So, when one says that they “know God”, the proof that they have been anointed by Christ is that they live as taught by the grace of God:
Titus 2:11-14 (CSB) For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14 He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works.
This was the covenant foretold long ago by the prophet Jeremiah:
Jeremiah 31:34 (CSB) No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know me, from the least to the greatest of them”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their iniquity and never again remember their sin.
